Care Instructions - Furs

This is a reference guide for customers that have purchased a toy that incorporates fur into the toy.

While fur is durable, care must still be taken when cleaning, storing and using your fur toys. Unlike traditional leather methods, fur-on-hide or hair-on-hide does not like to get wet. Wetting a fur hide down to the leather can cause shrinkage and make the hide feel "crackly". During the tanning and dyeing process, a maker can stretch a hide out to "break" the crackly texture, but you will not be able to do this with a finished toy, so it's important to keep your toy dry and to only use dry cleaning or spot cleaning methods.

How to dry clean fur:

If your fur has your average dry dust and dirt, you can simply brush it in the direction that the fur lays with a horse hair shoe brush. If your fur has built up oil, sweat, or cum stains from play, you can still dry clean these stains off by dusting your fur with cornmeal to absorb the moisture, and then brush it out with a horse hair shoe brush in the direction that the fur naturally lays. This of course will not disinfect the toy, so it's important to move down to spot cleaning, or regard this toy as "fluid bound".

For spot cleaning:

Mix equal parts isopropyl alcohol and water into a spray bottle. On the mist setting, lighty mist your fur, being careful not to soak it down to the hide. Use a dry microfiber cloth to blot away any excess moisture. Allow the fur to air dry naturally, keeping it away from direct heat sources, which can cause the fibers to dry out and lose their luster. Once dry, brush it out with a horse hair shoe brush in the direction that the fur naturally lays.

Best Storage Practices:

The ideal place to store fur is a dark, cool, and dry location where the fur has room to breathe. Fur does best at colder temperatures. You should store your fur in an area of your home that tends to be cooler. Consider the humidity of your home. If your home has more than 50% humidity, you may want to place a dehumidifier in the room you decide to store your furs. A closet, away from the sun, with a dehumidifier would be the most ideal storage situation.

If you decide to cover your furs to avoid dust accumulation from long term storage, make sure you cover your fur in a 100% cotton bag that has the bottom open to allow air to continue circulating.
